Leo Januario Amarantes, 72, of Fall River, died Friday at Charlton Memorial Hospital. Husband of Lorraine (Dupuis) Amarantes. Born in New Bedford, son of Aurora (Pratt) Soares of Fall River and the late Januario Amarantes. Graduate of BMC Durfee High School, Class of 1952. He retired in 1992 from the former New England Telephone Co. where he was a repair man for 26 years. Previously, he had worked at the former Firestone plant, Plymouth Rubber Co. and occasionally as a longshoreman. He was a member of the Telephone Workers Union, United Rubber Workers Union, Longshoreman's Assoc., Buick Club of America, Vintage Chevrolet Club of America, Fall River Historical Society, Faxon Animal Rescue League, Durfee Alumni Assoc. and the National Rifle Assoc. Leo was father of Rochelle Maccarone (husband-David) of Hudson, OH, Laurie Dasilva of Fall River and the late Steven L. Amarantes; brother of James P. Amarantes of Tiverton and Carol Daly of Newport; grandfather of Dan Maccarone (wife-Beth), Jennifer Purchase (husband-Keith), Kyle and Jared Dasilva and the late Cassie Amarantes, great grandfather of Michael and Nicholas Purchase. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. His Funeral Mass, celebrated by Father Barry Wall, was offered on Tuesday (11/27) in Holy Rosary Church. Committal services followed at St Patrick Cemetery. Pallbearers were David and Dan Maccarone and John Albergaria.
