Leo P. Smith Jr., age 58, passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2010, at his home in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Born in Fall River, MA, he was the son of Leo P. Smith Sr., of Fall River and the late Elizabeth M. (Greene) Smith. After graduating in 1970 with the charter class of Bishop Connolly High School, Leo earned his BA at Marquette University and received his Masters Degree in Social Work from Boston University. He was a former member of the Jesuit Community, New England Province. For several years, Leo worked as a licensed clinical social worker at Little House Health Center in Dorchester. For more than twenty-three years Leo was a member of the Caritas Health Care System, most recently serving for over sixteen years as the Executive Director of Caritas Good Samaritan Hospice, of Brighton and Norwood, MA. Leo was an active member of the Hospice and Palliative Care Federation of MA, as well as the Professional Advisory Committee to Social Services at St. Anthony's Shrine. He was on the Planning Committee and Moderator of the Schwartz Rounds at Norwood Hospital and also served for seven years on the Board of the Ashmont Hill Association. In addition to his father, he is survived by his three sisters: Kathleen M. Bettencourt (husband Mario), of East Taunton, Patricia E. Smith of Fall River, and Maureen E. Sullivan (husband Brian), of Somerset. He was the loving uncle of Brendan Page, Elizabeth Sullivan, and Jeffrey Bettencourt. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered in Holy Name Church, Fall River by celebrants; Rev. Jay T. Maddock, pastor of Holy Name Church, Rev. Barry W. Wall, retired pastor of Holy Rosary Church in Fall River, Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J. and Rev. Thomas J. Regan, S.J., both of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, and Rev. John P. Spencer, S.J. Leo was carried to eternal rest in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Robeson Street, Fall River, by pall bearers Mario Bettencourt, Brian Sullivan, James Camara, Ralph Martin, Richard Crescenzo and Joseph W. McNabb.

Family, friends and colleagues gathered for a Memorial Service on Sunday, September 12, 2010, at the Trinity Chapel in Newton, MA, on the campus of Boston College Law School. Officiating at the ceremony was the Most Reverend Bishop John P. Boles. Also speaking were Dr. Terence Murphy, Marybeth McCormack, and Dr. Leslie Martin.

On Friday, August 27, 2010, Leo's father, Leo P. Smith, Sr., passed away at his home in Fall River. He was 93. In their memory, contributions can be made to the Bishop Stang High School Advancement Office, 500 Slocum Road, North Dartmouth, MA 02747, or to the charity of one's choice.
