Leo P. Smith, Sr., age 93, of Fall River, passed away at home on Friday, August 27, 2010. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth M. (Greene) Smith and father of the late Leo P. Smith, Jr. Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late John J. Smith and the late Helena P. (McCarthy) Smith. A lifelong resident of Fall River, he was a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School Class of 1936, where he was later inducted into the Durfee High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982. In 1940 he earned his BA at Providence College. For 41 years, Leo was employed as an installer for the former New England Telephone Company. He served on the Board of Directors for the Southeastern Massachusetts Telephone Worker's Credit Union and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. He was a founder of the former Catholic Boys Day Camp in Westport, MA. An active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for more than 50 years, he served as president of the Sacred Heart conference for many years. Leo was the recipient of the Marion Medal. He was also a member of the Loyola Club of Bishop Connolly High School and the Providence College Alumni Association. Leo served on the Fall River Licensing Board for several years. After his retirement, Leo enjoyed his membership at the Ward 3 Social Club, "Moe's Raider's," and the King Philip Boat Club. Surviving family members include his three daughters, Kathleen M. Bettencourt (husband Mario), of East Taunton, Patricia E. Smith of Fall River, and Maureen E. Sullivan (husband Brian), of Somerset, three grandchildren, Brendan Page (wife Melissa), Elizabeth Sullivan, and Jeffrey Bettencourt, four great grandchildren, Chad, Haley, Lauren, and Sarah and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late James F. Smith, Charles D. Smith, John J. Smith, Helen M. Smith, Mary C. Smith, Anne "Anna" L. Smith and Rita M. Herlihy.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated in Holy Rosary Church on Beattie Street in Fall River by the former Pastor, Rev. Barry W. Wall, on Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Leo was carried to eternal rest in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Robeson Street, Fall River, by pall bearers Mario Bettencourt, Brian Sullivan, Antone Correia, James Camara, Jeffrey Bettencourt and Brendan Page.
