It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Leonel Ferreira Melo, who passed away on August 7, 2026, at the age of 79 after a battle with cancer. Born on June 24, 1947, in Furnas, São Miguel, Azores, Leonel lived a life marked by love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to those around him. Known for his kindness, strength, and generosity, he touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Family was the heart of Leonel's life. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose greatest happiness came from those he loved most. He cherished family traditions, celebrated every accomplishment, and was always there with a helping hand, wise advice, and an encouraging word. Blessed with a large and close-knit family, he treasured every opportunity to gather with his loved ones. His legacy of love, devotion, and togetherness will live on through the family he cherished so deeply.
At a young age, Leonel worked at the renowned Terra Nostra Hotel and Restaurant in Furnas, São Miguel. He proudly served in the Azorean Army before beginning a long and dedicated career in the garment manufacturing industry. In 1973, he immigrated to the United States in search of new opportunities and a better future for his family. Through hard work, perseverance, and determination, he built a life centered on family, faith, and love.
Throughout his life, Leonel found joy in the simple pleasures. He loved working in his yard and garden, tending to and feeding his chickens and rabbits, cheering on his beloved Sporting Clube de Portugal, and spending time fishing aboard his son's boat. More than any pastime, however, he enjoyed being surrounded by his grandchildren and creating memories with those he loved.
Leonel is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Mariana; his son, Luis Melo and wife Kimberly; his daughters, Stephanie Melo Terra and husband Nelson, and Ashley Melo, who held a uniquely treasured place in his heart and whose presence brought him endless love, happiness, and pride. He was the proud grandfather to Zachary Melo and wife Paige, Collin Melo, Curtis Melo, Mason Terra, and Sophia Terra, his cherished granddaughter and godchild. He was also blessed with two great-granddaughters, Adeline and Vivienne Melo, whose presence made his smile shine brighter and filled his heart with joy.
He is further survived by his siblings Eduardo DeMelo of Canada, Natalia Vieira of Canada, Diolena Zelaya of California, Urbano DeMelo of California, Lou DeMelo of California, and Ana Bryan of California, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Leonel was predeceased by his parents, Manuel and Maria dos Anjos Ferreira DeMelo; his parents-in-law, Manuel and Maria José Almeida; and his siblings, Lurdes Vieira, Alfredo DeMelo, and Francisco Melo.
Though he is no longer with us, the love he shared, the lessons he taught, and the countless memories he created will remain forever in the hearts of those whose lives he touched. His strength, devotion, and unwavering love for his family will continue to guide and inspire future generations.
Forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.
