Lodia do Couto Pacheco Paulo, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at the Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, Massachusetts, surrounded by her loving family, following an extended illness. A resident of Westport, Massachusetts, for many years, she was the widow of Manuel B. Paulo. Born in the village of Ribeirinha on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, she was a daughter of the late Mariano Pacheco and the late Evangelina (do Couto) Pacheco. In 1948, after completing her studies in Lisboa, Portugal, she accepted a position teaching school in the village of Mosteiros, a job she held until immigrating to Fall River in 1966. She was employed as a sewing machine operator in the garment trade of this city for over fifteen years at the former Samesta Manufacturing Company on Hartwell Street and was a member of the international Ladies Garment Workers Union. She was a devout Catholic and communicant of Santo Cristo Church for many years and then St. John the Baptist Church in Westport. Whether cooking or using her sewing skills to create outfits for her children and grandchildren, Lodia enjoyed every opportunity to spend time in the company of her family. She also enjoyed reading, walking, tending to her plants, traveling with family and watching Telanovelas, but family is what mattered to her most; the well being and happiness of her family. Surviving family members include a son, Manuel A. Paulo and his wife, Deborah, of Westport, three daughters; Eulalia Cordeiro, husband Guilherme, of Westport, Mary Facchiano, husband Michael, and Eduarda Silva, husband Agostinho, both of Swansea, Massachusetts, a brother, Rogerio Pacheco of London, Ontario, Canada, a sister, Maria Rego of Fergus, Canada, five grandchildren; Gorett McAvoy of Westport, Michael Facchiano, III, of Albany, New York, Matthew Facchiano of Swansea, Nicole Ekholm of Lincoln, Rhode Island, and Nadine Paulo of Westport, two great grandchildren; Avery Ekholm of Lincoln, RI, and Makenzie McAvoy of Westport, and many nieces and nephews. She was also the grandmother of the late Christopher M. Cordeiro, and sister of the late Luis Pacheco, Alfredo Pacheco, Boanerges Pacheco, Veriato Pacheco and Rosalina Correia. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, June 23, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, located at 945 Main Road in Westport followed by her committal at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Fall River, joining her husband, Manuel, and their grandson, Christopher.
