Retired District of Columbia probation officer Lucinda Camara Meehan, age 76, passed away on April 22, 2024, at the Cottages of Dartmouth Village, surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy of love of family and animals. She was born in Fall River on July 14, 1947.
Lucinda was a 1965 graduate of Mount Saint Mary Academy in Fall River with the distinction of perfect attendance for grades 1 through 12. She graduated from Central Connecticut State College with a bachelor's degree in sociology and moved to the Washington, DC area where she received her master's degree in criminology from American University. Lucinda had a 30-year career with the District of Colombia Courts System in supervisory roles in both adult and juvenile probation departments. After retiring, she continued to work as a substitute teacher in the Arlington, Virginia school district.
Her life was dedicated to being an advocate for all animals, especially squirrels, serving as a wildlife rehabilitator for many years. Lucinda was also a proud member of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' Vanguard Society for 33 years.
Lucinda will be remembered for her kindness to all, devotion to service, cackling laughter, incredible work ethic, and her love of oldies and country music among other outstanding qualities.
She was predeceased by her parents, Herculano Camara and Lucinda (Camara) Camara. She is survived by her brothers, John Camara of East Providence, RI, Michael Camara, his wife Diane, their children Stephanie Smith and Travis Smith, his wife Jamie and children Berkley Smith and Peyton Smith all of Texas; and Robert Camara of Somerset and his girlfriend Dawn Lawrence. Lucinda is also survived by her beloved nephew Vincent of Somerset.
In addition to her family, she will be missed by her lifelong friends Susan Costa of New York and Phyllis and George Hary of Connecticut. She lived most of her life in Arlington, Virginia, where she leaves behind numerous friends and co-workers.
Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, April 26th, at St. John of God Church in Somerset followed by her committal at St. Patrick Cemetery in Fall River. The family appreciates the loving support provided to Lucinda by the staff at the Cottages at Dartmouth Village and New England Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lucinda's memory to the Alzheimer's Association of Massachusetts or the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
