Luis P. Furtado, 102, of Fall River, husband of the late Maria da Conceicao (Caetano) Furtado, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at Kimwell Nursing Home. Born in Sao Vicente, St. Michael, Azores, a son of the late Manuel Furtado and the late Maria Amaral, he served in a medical detachment of the Portuguese Army, driving motorcycle with sidecar for the Commander. Luis emigrated to Fall River in 1967.
He worked as a machinist for many years at the former Quaker Fabric and was employed prior to that for a time at the former Providence Pile – later retiring in 1984. An inventor, and master of multiple crafts, Luis had many skills and talents, including electrician and welder. He designed and erected wrought iron fencing and church bell towers. Luis also enjoyed fixing watches and clocks, as well as designing and building pressers for winemaking.
A musician and founder of the Our Lady of Light Band, Luis enjoyed playing trombone, teaching music and tuning pianos.
He is survived by: four children, Maria da Luz Furtado of Falls Church, VA, Alcira Doiron of Fall River, Cecilia Furtado of Memphis, TN, and Isaac R. Furtado of Fall River; a sister, Cecilia Chaves of Fall River; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Luis was also the father of the late Luis R. Furtado and Manuel Furtado; brother of the late Manuel Furtado, Guilhermina Cordeiro, Marcolina Cardoso, and Angelina Pereira Furtado; and grandfather of the late Maddox Furtado.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, August 16th, in Espirito Santo Church followed by a private cremation. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Luis' memory to a charity of your choice.
