Obituary

Luis Gilberto Torres, 76, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 following a brief illness. A proud Fall River resident, Luis was born in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Açores and immigrated to the United States in 1957. He was the son of the late Antonio de Resendes and the late Maria Isabel (Pimentel) Torres.

Luis is lovingly survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Olga M. (Camara) Torres, whom he deeply cherished and adored. Theirs was a love story marked with friendship, respect and a deep faith in each other and in God.

Luis is also survived by his children, Christine Beach and her husband, Kyle Beach and Lou Torres and wife, Debra Torres who will forever miss their devoted and loving Dad. His grandchildren, Caitlin and her husband Shaun, Shannon, Allison, Talya, Jacob, Sarah, Kyle and his great grandson Hendrix, will miss the love and the joy that emanated from their beloved Vavô. He leaves his two sisters, Isabel Resendes and Maria Antoineta Overlock and his brother, Jose Manuel Torres. Luis also leaves many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and great nephews that he cherished and loved dearly. He was also the brother of the late Alfred Torres, Antonio Torres, Margarida Resendes and Madalena Do Monte.

Luis proudly served our country in the United States Navy. A Vietnam War Veteran, he was proud to have served honorably. Locally, Luis served the City of Fall River as a firefighter for 30 years. He shared his stories about his time in the service to others fortunate enough to spend some quality time with him. He captured the hearts of those he met with his beautiful smile and made friends wherever he went. You knew you had a loyal friend in him until the end.

His greatest joys came from spending time with his family and his loyal dog, Lucky. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, watching boxing and tennis and working on projects around the house, tending to his garden, playing his harmonica, and adoring all the babies in the family. Luis loved helping others and was quick to fix just about anything you put in front of him. He was a true craftsman. He was our "Bob Villa". If you needed a fishing buddy he was your guy. He loved to fish with his son, brothers, and cousins on his many boats over the years. He loved to travel and spend time with his many wonderful friends in Florida and Brazil.

Luis was an absolute treasure here on Earth. He had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the world. You can honor his memory by sharing a song, telling a silly joke and, most importantly, showing up in service to others. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make others laugh - his own laughter was contagious. He loved music and would almost always be whistling or playing his harmonica. We know that his songs will carry on.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, September 27th, in St Anthony of Padua Church followed by his committal with military honors at St. Patrick Cemetery.
