Obituary

Lurdes Alves 77, of Westport, MA, passed away peacefully at her home on December 8, 2025. Born in Sao Miguel, Acores, Portugal, she was a daughter of the late Gil Ferreira and Lidia (nee Massa) Ferreira. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ildeberto Alves, in 2021.

Lurdes was the mother of Natercia Medrano (David) of Chicago, IL and Aurelia Mauricio (Arnold) of Westport, MA. She was a very proud grandmother of 3 boys, Noah, Evan and Jonathan and had many "heart" granddaughters.

Lurdes was one of five children, Vasco Benevides (Lucia) of Ontario, Canada, Gil Ferreira (died in infancy), Odette Moniz (Eddie) of Naples, FL and Sid Ferreira (Daniele) of Dover, Delaware.

Among her many talents were cooking, gourmet Portuguese foods and baked goods for her family including her many nephews and nieces and godchildren, Marcel, Britney and Phillip. Lurdes was a very active volunteer at Espirito Santo Church in Fall River, where she served in the Ladies' Guild of Nossa Senhora do Rosario and on the Mordomia Committee. Lurdes loved making malassadas with her friends for the Grande Festas do Divino Espírito Santo da Nova Inglaterra.

She also joined in various church excursions in the USA as well as to Italy, Spain, France, and most recently to Greece in 2024.

Lurdes became a seamstress at age 12 and worked at many clothing factories once she immigrated to the US in 1976 with her family. Since retiring, Lurdes continued her love of sewing by doing alterations and tailoring. Although she never advertised, she had plenty of customers and friends who genuinely appreciated her skills and creativity.

Lurdes loved her family and friends passionately and leaves behind a legacy of hard work, frugality and faith in God.

The family requests that instead of flowers, please consider making donations to: Espírito Santo Church, 311 Alden St., Fall River, MA  02721 in Honor of Lurdes Alves
