Manuel A. Moniz, age 86, of Bulgarmarsh Road in Tiverton, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, December 31, 2010. He was the husband of Hilda (Mendonca) Moniz. Born in the village of Povoacao, on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, he was a son of the late Arthur Amaral Moniz and the late Maria Jose (Pimental) Moniz and father of the late Steven Paul Moniz. After living in the Azores for twenty-four years he moved to Fall River in 1948 and was naturalized as a citizen of the United States. Mr. Moniz has resided in Tiverton for thirty-six years in the home he constructed in 1974. A skilled carpenter, he was the founder of the Manuel A. Moniz Construction Co. and was a former recipient of the Southeastern Massachusetts Home Builder of the Year Award. In addition to his wife, Hilda, surviving family members include his four daughters, Beverly A. Nill, husband Stephen, Debra Moniz-Phillips, husband Richard, and Dorothy Moniz, all of Tiverton, and Katherine Mairs, husband Robert, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, a sister, Tiberia Bettencourt of Fall River, a brother, Marcelino Amaral of Sao Paulo, Brazil, six grandchildren, Nathaniel Nill, Sophia Mairs, Raquelle Mairs, Quinnton Mairs, Robert Mairs V, and Gyselle Mairs, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Maria Fortuna, Jose Amaral, Angelo Amaral, and Judith Medeiros. On Tuesday, January 4, family and friends gathered for a Funeral Mass celebrating Manuel's life in St Anthony of Padua Church. Following the ceremony, pallbearers Steven Nill, Nathaniel Nill, Robert Mairs, Richard Phillips, Gordon Pacheco and Steve Mendonca brought Manny to his final resting place at St Patrick Cemetery in Fall River.
