Obituary

Manuel O. Alves, 74, of Fall River, passed away Wednesday, May 19th, at St. Anne's Hospital. He was the husband of Geraldine (Costa) Alves. Born in Mosteiros, St. Michael, Azores, son of the late Manuel M. & Diana (Oliveira) Alves. A Fall River resident for 64 years, he worked in greyhound racing in Taunton, served in the US Army and was a candidate for Mayor of Fall River many times. He belonged to AMVET's Post 60, St. Anthony Band Club, Don Carlos Social Club, St. Cecilia's Club, Republican Club, was the former president of MA Greyhound Breeders Association, former board member of New England Greyhound Association, former treasurer and chairman of Local 1227, Fall River Joint Board AFL/CIO, former member of Teamsters Local 526, former member of Laborers Union Local 610, and the National Greyhound Association. Manuel is survived by a daughter, Mary-Rose Alves; sons, Manuel, Mark, Michael and Matthew Alves; brothers, Joseph and John Alves; sisters, Fernanda Alves and Emily Coelho; grandchildren, Baxter, Payton, Abigail and Bryan; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral On Monday, May 24th, friends and family gathered for a Funeral Mass in St. Anthony of Padua Church. Following the services, pallbearers Joseph Caetano, Dave Proux, Jeff Hyde, Brian Kinnane, John Navcizo, and Frank Arruda brought Manuel to his final resting place in St. Patrick Cemetery while bugler Sammy Costa and soloist Nicholas Brown honored his memory.
