Manuel C. Bernardo, 74, of Fall River, husband of Maria Fatima (Resendes) Bernardo, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 after a long illness. Born in Agua Retorta, St. Michael, Azores, he was a son of the late Manuel Bernardo Botelho and the late Catarina (Carreiro) Botelho. Prior to his retirement, he was a machine operator in the local textile industry for many years. He proudly served in the Portuguese Army for close to four years. A longtime parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Church, in his younger years, Manuel served on the Feast Committee and was also a member of the Holy Name Society. He loved playing the accordion, writing poems, playing cards, and gardening. But what Manuel enjoyed most was spending quality time with his loving family and his pets. Besides his wife of fifty years, he leaves: his three sons, Scott M. Bernardo and his wife, Andrea, of Fall River, Kevin Bernardo and his wife, Sandra, of Dighton, and Peter M. Bernardo and his wife, Diane, of Westport; six grandchildren, Aaron J.S. Bernardo, Sierra R. Bernardo, Kendra E. Bernardo, Kassidy R. Bernardo, Syles M. Bernardo, and Dawson P. Bernardo; two great-grandchildren, Lana G. Bernardo and Merric S. Bernardo; five sisters, Maria Melo (late husband, Jose), Regina Machado and her husband, Dinis, Alda Pacheco and her husband, Louis, Natalia Carreiro (late husband, Norberto), all of Fall River, and Catarina Carreiro and her husband, Manuel, of Assonet; one brother, Jose C. Botelho and his wife, Osana of Fall River; and many nieces and nephews. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, November 4th, in St. Anthony of Padua Church followed by his committal at St. Patrick Cemetery.
