Obituary

Manuel A. Camara, 85, of South Dartmouth, loving husband for 60 years of Olivia (Viveiros) Camara, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 in the comforts of his home following a long illness. Born in Ajuda da Bretanha, St. Micheal, Azores, he was a son of the late Antonio Oliveira Camara and the late Maria Jose (Fernandes) Camara.

Until his death, he was a member of the Laborers Union Local 610. He was employed by J. F. White Contracting for 42 years. While employed he worked on many big-name projects, most notably, the "Big Dig". He had a passion for gardening and watching wildlife, especially the Hummingbirds. In the summer, he relished going out to dig quahogs often with a grandchild in tow. He delighted in riding on his golf cart around the yard to care for his gardens or to go up and down the road. Manuel was an avid New England sports fan. He also enjoyed watching the running of the bulls in Terceira, and, back in his younger years, had participated once himself. He was a faithful man. He loved going out for long drives and in the evenings he enjoyed relaxing watching YouTube.

He and his wife traveled extensively to be with or visit family in such places as the Azores, Virginia, Brazil, Niagara Falls, Canada, and the Grand Canyon. What was most important to Manuel was his family and spending quality time with all of them.

Besides his devoted wife, he leaves his loving children, Anne Marie Russell and her husband Daniel, of Fall River, Tony Camara and his wife Karen, Thomas Camara, Peter Camara, and Steven Camara, all of Dartmouth; his seven grandchildren, Colin Russell, Harrison Russell, Jessica Peasley, Amber Camara, Kelly Camara, Joshua Camara, and Simon Camara; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Maria Teresa Farias, Jose Maria Oliveira, Maria Lourdes Viveiros, Leona Vala, and Maria Jose da Silva, all of Canada; along with many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Maria de Lourdes Oliveira and late Eduardo Oliveira.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, April 29th, at St. George Church in Westport followed by his committal at Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation in Manuel's memory to: American Cancer Society, Centralized Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 1120, Framingham, MA 01701.
