Obituary

Manuel S. de Sousa, 80, of High Street in Somerset, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 11, 2008. He was the husband of Cecilia R. Sousa, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage. Born in Calhetas, Sao Miguel, Azores, he was a son of the late Jose Soares & Maria de Jesus (Machado) de Sousa. He spent 5 years working on the Canadian Railroad before coming to Fall River in 1959. A Somerset resident since 1963, he worked for the Parks Corp. for 25 years, belonged to the Teamsters Union, was a member of the Somerset Historical Society and parishioner of St. Patrick's Church. Manuel was very proud to have become a United States Citizen in the early 1970's. He enjoyed gardening & spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include daughters, Lola Souza Judge of Nanuet, NY, and Diane Goodwin (husband Gregory) of Somerset, Brothers Jose Soares de Sousa of Swansea and the late Laureno "Larry" Soares de Sousa, sisters, Maria da Luz Rego of Bristol, RI, and the late Serafina Soares de Sousa, grandchildren, Alexander and Katherine Judge and Samuel, Grace and Thomas Goodwin, family friend, Frederick Moy, and many nieces and nephews. His funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's Church. Pallbearers Alexander Judge, Joe and Norbert Soares, Tony and Phil Cabral, Fernando Sousa and Manny Soares brought him to his final resting place at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Somerset.
