Manuel P. DeMelo, 85, of Fall River, husband of Elza (Couto) DeMelo, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 7, 2020at St. Anne's Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Faial da Terra, St. Michael, Azores, he was a son of the late Antonio P. DeMelo and Maria (Pereira) DeMelo.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as machinist for many years. Considered to be quite the handyman, Manuel also loved gardening and listening to vintage Portuguese band music. He also enjoyed traveling, especially to Canada to visit family.
Besides his wife of sixty-four years, he leaves: his children, Maria Resendes and her husband, Jose, of Canada, and Manuel DeMelo of Pawtucket, Rhode Island; his grandchildren, Joseph Resendes and his wife, Rose Mary, Steven Resendes (Arianna), and Katie DeMelo; great-grandddaughter, Mariana Resendes; sisters, Claudiana Melo (late husband, Joao) of Taunton and Lourdes DaSilva (late husband, Manuel) of Swansea; his brother, Humberto DeMelo and his wife, Graca, of Swansea; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Maria Resendes (Manuel) and the late Ilda DaSilva (Joao).
Following his cremation, a private committal service was held on Wednesday, January 6th, at Notre Dame Cemetery. When the current crisis allows, his family is planning to celebrate his life with a Memorial Funeral Mass, the details of which will be announced here.
