Maria (Almeida) Batista, 88 , of Snell Street, died on Monday at the Fall River Jewish Home after a brief illness. She was the widow of Armand Batista. Born in Agua de Pau, St. Michael, Azores, she was a daughter of the late Francisco and Augusta (Mello) Almeida. A Fall River resident since 1952, she was a retired textile worker and attended the Portuguese American Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Alan Batista of Tiverton, RI, daughter, Zelia Medeiros of Somerset, a sister, Juliana Almeida of Canada, four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was also mother of the late Norbert Batista, and sister of the late Manuel Almeida, Maria Odelia Almeida, Ana Cunha, Augustina Almeida, and Carmo Almeida. Funeral was held Thursday, August 2nd, in the Silva-Faria Funeral Home, with a service given by Rev. Hubert Morden. Pallbearers were Gary Monahan, Joe Souza, Brian Costa, Bill Wiley, Virgil Medeiros and Nuno Medeiros. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery.
