Maria C. DeSousa, age 82, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, following an illness. She was the wife of Anibal DeSousa of North Dartmouth. Born in Ponta Delgada, on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, she was a daughter of the late Francisco Reis and the late Maria do Carmo Martins. After residing in Sao Miguel for thirty six years, she moved to Fall River in1966 and was naturalized as a citizen of the United States. Maria was employed as a trimmer in the garment trade of this city for many years at the former Franconia Sportswear on Quequechan Street, and the former Jensen Manufacturing on Shove Street. Although Maria and her husband moved to North Dartmouth in 2010, they remained parishioners of St. Anthony of Padua Church on Bedford Street in Fall River. In addition to her husband, Anibal, surviving family members include: her three daughters, Thelma Cardoso (husband Luis) of Fall River, Mary Camara (husband Edmundo) of North Dartmouth, and Cecilia DaCosta (late husband Manuel) of Fall River; three brothers, Humberto Costa of Warwick, Rhode Island, Fernando Costa of Peabody, MA, and Luis Reis of Fall River; a sister, Eduarda Silva of Fall River; seven grandchildren, Joshua Cardoso, Stephanie Barbosa, Jason Cardoso, Eric Rodrigues, Philip Cardoso, Priscilla DaCosta and Stacy Marques; eight great grandchildren, Ethan Cardoso, Evan Cardoso, Landon Cardoso, Layla Cardoso, Jason Cardoso, Leah Cardoso, Ian Cardoso and Ava Barbosa; and many nieces & nephews. She was also the sister of the late Manuel Reis, Carlos Reis, Jose Martins and Octavio Reis. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, February 23, 2013, in St Anthony of Padua Church followed by her committal at Notre Dame Cemetery.
