Obituary

Maria Bernadette Carrilho, 88, of Somerset and wife of the late Fernando Jose Carrilho, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 3, 2021 at her daughter's home where she resided since 2010. Born in Madeira, Portugal, she was a daughter of the late Antonio Ramalho Fernandes and the late Maria Comba (De Abreu) Fernandes.

An accomplished seamstress with a keen eye for fashion, Maria also loved flower gardening, nature, reading, cooking, writing poems "romarias", her daily walks through her neighborhood and socializing with friends despite her hearing disability. She was also an avid soccer fan and enjoyed watching  RTP, listening to Amalia Rodrigues and singing many of her songs to her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Maria was resilient, having survived many trials and tribulations, health ailments, never losing hope, always believing in miracles, and displaying great devotion to our Lady of Fatima. But what was most important and brought her much joy, was spending quality time with her family, especially her great-grandson, Tyler.

She leaves: her loving daughters, Carmen Francisco and her husband, Anthony, of Somerset, and Sara Carrilho and her wife, Joanne, of Wellingborough, England; her seven grandchildren, Sarah Francisco, Matthew Francisco, Daniel Casburn, Molly Casburn, Harvey Casburn, William Casburn, and Charles Casburn; one great-grandson, Tyler Francisco; her sister, Gisela Camacho; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Carlos Carrilho and sister of fourteen late siblings including the Antonio Fernandes family of New York with all of whom she was very close.

Special thanks to Southcoast VNA who provided the medical attention and support that she needed.

Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, July 10th, in St. John of God Church followed by her committal at Nathan Slade Cemetery both in Somerset.
