Obituary

Maria Julia Alpoim Correia, 91, of Fall River, widow of Serafim L. Correia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, surrounded by her family and so much love.  Maria was predeceased by her beloved canine companion Peanut.  She was born in Fontoura, Valença do Minho, Portugal, daughter of the late Antonio de Caldas Alpoim and Aurora Maria Pereira.  Maria bravely emigrated to the United States in 1975 in search of a better life for her family.  She worked for many years at both Fall River Nursing Home and Whaling Manufacturing.  She was a strong woman of faith and a parishioner of Espirito Santo Church.

Maria valued family, hard work, and caring for others.  She was the quintessential Vavó, helping to raise her grandchildren, Sandra, Mario, Jr., Nicole, and Joshua and her great-granddaughter Brianna with care and love.   She enjoyed gardening, cooking for her family (even when they said they weren't hungry), listening to Voz do Emigrante on the radio, and watching many Portuguese TV shows including O Preço Certo.

Maria loved hearing about what was going on in her family members' lives, discussing current events, and gossiping with her sisters.  A curious mind, she would often be spotted keeping a close eye on neighborhood happenings from her window.  She will be remembered for her passion, resilience, intelligence, and wit.  Her strength and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Maria is survived by two children: Manuel José Pereira Alpoim (late wife Maria) of Cerdal, Portugal and Maria Laurinda (Pereira Alpoim) Ferraz (husband Fernando) of Fall River; six siblings, Maria Teresa Ferreira and Maria Joaquina Morais both of Fall River, Rosa Pereira Alpoim, Cesaltina Pereira Alpoim Silva, Maria Aurora Pereira Alpoim, and Joaquim Pereira Alpoim all of Fontoura, Portugal; seven grandchildren, Sandra Alpoim-Raposo (husband Derek), Nicole Oliveira, Joshua Oliveira, Mónica Alpoim, Maria de Fátima da Rocha, Eugênia Saraiva; great-grandchildren, Brianna Raposo and Hannah Mercer Oliveira, several more great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren in Portugal; and many nieces and nephews.  Maria was predeceased by three siblings, Manuel Pereira Caldas Alpoim of Portugal, José Pereira Alpoim of Fall River, and António Pereira Alpoim of Portugal.  She was also predeceased by her beloved grandson, Mario Oliveira, Jr.
