Maria H. DeArruda, 76, of Fall River, wife of Messias DeArruda, passed away peacefully on Thursday after a long illness. Born in Bretanha, St. Michael, Azores, she was a daughter of the late Joao and Mariana (Cordeiro) Oliveira. She was a machine operator at Shelburne Shirt for many years prior to her retirement. Maria was always smiling, showing her good sense of humor. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, singing, and baking, particularly massa and biscoitos. Most important to Maria was her family whom she loved very much. Besides her husband of fifty-five years, she leaves her children: Messias Arruda and his wife Cindy, Helen Arruda, Maria I. Rego and her husband Antonio, all of Fall River, and Elizabeth Machado and her husband Roy of Somerset; six grandchildren, Vanessa and Jennifer Rego, Evan and Emma Arruda, and Sarah and Lucas Machado; two sisters, Mariana Rebello (late husband-David) of Fall River and Alda Gaudencio (husband-Vasco) of Dartmouth; two brothers, Fernando Oliveira (wife-Beatrice) and John Oliveira (late wife-Victoria) of Fall River; and several nieces and nephews. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, November 6th, in Espirito Santo Church followed by her committal at St. Patrick Cemetery.
