Maria Eduarda (Tavares)DeMelo, 89, of North Dartmouth, wife of the late Gil S. DeMelo, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at St. Anne's Hospital following a long illness. Born in Sao Pedro, Nordestinho, St Michael, Azores, she was a daughter of the late Dorvalino Carvalho Tavares and the late Maria Da Estrela Amaral.
Prior to her retirement she worked as a Floor Lady in the local textile industry for many years. She loved cooking, especially Sunday dinners for her family, shopping, and tending to her house plants. She also enjoyed traveling back to her homeland in the Azores to visit family. Most notably, Maria was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and was always eager and willing to give anyone a helping hand.
She leaves her children, Jose Melo of Acushnet, Noemia DeMelo Benavides and her husband, Carlos, David de Melo and his wife, Cidalia, Ana Resendes and her husband, Manuel, Nelia Silva and her husband, Valdemiro, Lucia Raposo and her husband, Antonio, all of Dartmouth, and Tiberio T. Melo and his wife, Frances, of Fall River; her eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; her sisters, Salome Carvalho (late husband, Ernesto Borges Cabral) and Almedina Condinho (late husband, Luis); her brother, Tiberio Tavares (late wife, Natalia); and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Verginio Carvalho.
Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, December 27th, at St. Anthony of Padua Church followed by her committal at Notre Dame Cemetery both in Fall River.
