Maria G. (Melo) Correia, of Swansea, the widow of Antonio C. Correia, passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, at the Somerset Ridge Center, in Somerset, MA, on Friday, June 19, 2015. She was 79. Born on the island of St. Michael in the Azores, she was a daughter of the late Joao Melo and the late Maria C. (Sousa) Melo. After residing in the Azores for 39 years she moved to Fall River and was naturalized as a citizen of the United States. A resident of Fall River for many years, Maria was employed in the garment trade of this city and was a former parishioner of St Anthony of Padua Church. Surviving family members include two sons; John Correia and Carlos Correia, both of Fall River, three daughters; Margaret C. Soares of Swansea, Ann Sousa of Fall River, and Grace Rego of Somerset, two brothers; Gus Melo of Florida, and Jose Melo of Fall River, 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of two late infants Duarte & Manuel Correia, and suffered the loss of her two adult sons named for the infants, Duarte Correia and Manuel Correia. Maria was also the sister of the late Margaret Medeiros, Miguel Melo and Fernando Melo. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, June 25th in St. Dominic's Church in Swansea followed by her committal at Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River.
