Obituary

Maria R. Sousa, 68, of Fall River, wife of Alberto C. Sousa, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2025 in the comforts of her home following a long illness. Born in Lomba da Maia, St. Michael, Azores, she was a daughter of the late Manuel Couto and the late Maria (Costa) Couto.

Prior to her retirement she was an Assistant Manager for D'Angelo's for many years. She loved cooking, baking (her specialty being sweet bread and malassadas), knitting, crocheting, and gardening. She also enjoyed traveling to such places as California, Canada, Florida, and back to her homeland in the Azores. Most important to Maria was spending quality time with her family especially her grandchildren.

Besides her loving husband of fifty-two years, she leaves her children, Mitchell Sousa and his wife, Farrah, of Swansea, Derrick Sousa of Florida, Marlene Carmo and her husband, Jeff, of California, and Jonathan Sousa of Hawaii; her seven grandchildren, Evan Miranda, Alexia Whittle, Evangeline Sousa, Julianna Sousa, Sydney Carmo, Saige Carmo, and Dominick Sousa; her sisters, Fernanda Moreira and her husband, Alberto, Elsa Melo and her husband, Luis, both of Fall River, Frances Sousa and her husband, Angelo, Lidia Kryla, both of California, and Margaret Couto and her husband, Guilherme, of Fall River; brothers, Antonio Couto and his wife, Fernanda, of Fall River, and Luis Couto and his wife, Lumelia, of Fall River; and many nieces and nephews.

Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, May 15th, in St. Anthony of Padua Church followed by her committal at St. Patrick Cemetery.
