Maria (Sardinha) Torres, age 87, of Fall River, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 31, 2014, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI. She was the widow of Manuel P. Torres. Born in the village of Agua Retorta, on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Sardinha and the late Rosa (Tabicas) Sardinha. A Fall River resident for sixty-five years, she was employed in the garment trade of this city for many years until her retirement in 1989. Maria enjoyed Sewing and Crocheting. She was also an active member of her Parish at St. Anthony of Padua in Fall River, MA, and enjoyed cooking for the many church social functions. Beloved mother of Maria T. Silva (husband Jose), Rosemary T. Aguiar (husband - the late Victor), Manuel S. Torres, Joseph S. Torres and Luiz "Lou" S. Torres (wife Maria). She also leaves six brothers; Manuel Sardinha, Carlos Sardinha, Jose Sardinha, Luiz Sardinha, Tiberio Sardinha and Angelo Sardinha. She also had eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Maria was also the sister of the late Lazaro Sardinha. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, February 4, in St. Anthony of Padua Church followed by her committal at St. Patrick Cemetery.
