Mariana R. Barao, 100, of Fall River, wife of the late Manuel Barao, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2021 at Catholic Memorial Home after a brief illness. Born in Fenais da Luz, St. Michael, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Manuel Machado and the late Etelvina (Ferreira) Machado.

Prior to her retirement she worked as a Master Seamstress in the local textile industry for many years, extending her talent to anyone who was in need of a good seamstress.   She loved cooking and baking, especially making her delicious malassadas, and gathering  her family together for a Sunday meal. Mariana also enjoyed cruises and her trip to Disney World. But most notably, becoming a widow at a very young age, she remarkably and lovingly raised all seven of their remaining children on her own.

She leaves: her loving children, Antonio Baron and his wife, Fatima, of Somerset, Paul Barao, Maria Carvalho and her husband, Antonio, Bert Barao and his wife, Dawn, all of Fall River, and Fatima Tremblay and her husband, David, of West Wareham; seven grandchildren, Joshua Barao, Andy Carvalho, Kelly Manteiga, Monique Barao, Alexis Madeira, Karina Barao, and Zachery Barao; three greatgrandchildren, Haley, Jacobe, and Peyton; her sister, Guimar Rego of Fall River, and many nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Joanne Barao, Raymond Barao, Peter Barao, and Humberto Barao and sister of the late Manuel Machado, Maria Etelvina Correiro, Mary Jo Penacho, Inez Brum, and Teresa Rego.

The Barao family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Henry D. Crowley for the many years of compassionate care he extended to our mother.

A funeral service was held at the conclusion of calling hours on Tuesday morning, March 23rd, in our Fall River Chapel followed by her private committal at Notre Dame Cemetery.
