Mariano DaPonte Barreira, 92, of Fall River, husband of the late Ines deJesus (Carlos) Barreira, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 27, 2019. Born in Santo Antonio, St. Michael, Azores, he was a son of the late Maria Teresa Barreira. Prior to his retirement he worked as a laborer for a local nursery for many years. He loved gardening, fishing, and, in his younger days, whale hunting. A hard-worker and somewhat of a jokester, Mariano also enjoyed making his own wine. A devout Catholic, he served as sexton at his parish church of Espirito Santo many years ago. He leaves his children, Mariano DaPonte and his wife, Normanda, Gabriela Benjamin and her husband, Luis, both of Westport, David Barreira and his wife, Teresa, John Ponte, Laura Soares and her husband, Luciano, Idalina Barreira, Maria Ponte, all of Fall River, Ines Camara and her husband, Phil, of Brockton, and Simon Barreira and his wife, Michelle, of Bristol; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; sisters, Margarida DaPonte and Maria DaPonte, both of the Azores; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the grandfather of the late Cory Leite and brother of the late Antonio DaPonte, Luisa DaPonte, Orcelina Camara, Maria Ponte, Idalina DaPonte, and Guilhermina Ponte. His funeral arrangements, under the direction of the Silva-Faria Funeral Homes, were private.
