Obituary

Mariano C. Da Ponte, 68, of Fall River and Florida, husband of Normanda (Cordeiro) Ponte, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 18, 2024 in Florida. Born in San Antonio, St. Michael, Azores, he was a son of the late Mariano C. Barreira and the late Ines deJesus (Carlos) Barreira.

Prior to his retirement he worked as a carpenter in the local construction industry for many years. He loved carpentry, landscaping, fishing, cooking in the kitchen with his wife, cruises, and traveling to such places as the Caribbean, Florida, Canada, and back to his homeland in the Azores. An avid Benfica fan, he also, in his younger days, played and coached soccer. Most important to Mariano was family and spending quality time with all of them.

Besides his loving and devoted wife of forty-eight years,  he leaves his children, Valter M. Ponte of Fall River, Robert M. Ponte and his wife, Stacey Furtado-Ponte, of New Bedford, and Daine Peckham and her husband, Christopher, of Fall River; his eight grandchildren, Aliyah, Jayce, Jayden, Violet, Liam, Mia, Noah, and Aubrey; one great-granddaughter, Haven; sisters, Ines Camara, Gabriela Benjamin, Laura Soares, Maria Barreira, and Idalina Barreira; his brothers, David Barreira, Simon Barreira, and John Ponte; and many nieces and nephews.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, March 26th, in Espirito Santo Church followed by his committal at St. Patrick Cemetery.
