Marvin Alexander "Doc" Mortens, 74, of Swansea, husband of the late Shirley Ann (Marcotte) Mortens, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Detroit, MI, son of Thelma (Robinson) Mortens of Fall River and the late Hemfred Mortens, he moved to the Fall River area in 1974 and resided in Swansea for the past 6 years. A Navy and Army Veteran of the Korean War, he served his country honorably for 10 years. He volunteered extensively at Battleship Cove, especially with the US Navy Sea Cadets for over 15 years, serving as their Lt. Cmdr. for 4 years. Besides his mother, survivors include: a son, Dr. Martin B. Mortens (wife, Lisa) of Johnston, Iowa; 2 daughters, Elna K. Lopes (husband, David) of Swansea & Tina Raposa (husband, Peter) of Fall River; son-in-law, Dave Slater of Newburg, Maryland; 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Capt. William Goodall and his wife Sylvia of England. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Stacey Ann Slater. On October 24th a memorial service was held for family and friends aboard the USS Massachusetts at Battleship Cove.
