Mary T. Carvalho of Somerset, Massachusetts, formerly of Fall River, an educator, died February 11, 2018.  Born in Fall River, she remained a lifelong resident of Fall River until 2013.  She was the daughter of the late Dr. Joseph and Adeline (Cavaco) Carvalho.

She graduated from the former Academy of the Sacred Hearts in 1938 and from the College of New Rochelle in 1942.  She received an M Ed from Bridegwater State College.  She also graduated from the Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists and worked for her father and brother in their dental offices.

She first was a teacher at the Tansey school, then taught French to the children in grades 4-8 in the Academically Talented program in Fall River.  She later became the director of that program.  She also taught Portuguese for several years at the BMC Durfee High School.

During the summer she studied at the University of Coimbra and the University of Lisbon in Portugal and the University of Poitiers in France and at Vanderbuilt University.

She served as a trustee for the Fall River Public Library.  She also served on the boards of the SPCC, the 9 ^th St. Day nursery, the F.R. Symphony, the Newport-F.R. College of New Rochelle Alumnae association, the Coimbra Club, the F.R. Garden Club, the F. R. Women's Club, the F.R. Historical Society, the Academy of Sacred Hearts Alumnae Association, the Friends of the F.R. Library, Delta Kappa Gamma Beta Chapter and the Lafayette Durfee Historical Foundation.  She volunteered at Charlton Memorial Hospital for more than 20 years.

She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Alice) Neves of Fall River and Mrs. George (Beatrice) Carrellas of Middletown, RI.  She leaves behind two nieces, June Kingston and Walda Ann Walsh and four nephews, Michael Carvalho, Stephen Carrellas, Philip Carrellas, and Matthew Carrellas and two great nephews and two great nieces.

Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, February 15th, in Holy Name Church followed by her committal at Notre Dame Cemetery.
