Mary J. Gaspar, 95, of Somerset, passed away Tuesday October 14, 2008 after a short illness. Widow of Anthony S. Gaspar, she was a daughter of the late Anthony & Maria Jose (Faria) Rego. On May 12, 1913, Mary was born in the small village of Faja de Cima on the island of St. Michael in the Azores. Her father preceded her to America, and in 1920 Mary, her mother and younger brother migrated to the United States. She started in the public school system and graduated from Durfee High School, with honors, in the Spring of 1932. She and her husband Tony were married on April 19, 1941 and after World War II had 2 sons. Mary, in 1951, met Samuel Bazarsky who would change her life. She worked for Mr. Bazarsky as bookkeeper-in-charge for his new company, New England Poultry, and retired in 1978 as Vice-President of operations. Throughout her working years, Mary was an avid bowler and belonged to many Somerset leagues including the Sociables, the Spectator Girls and, in her retirement years, the Senior Rockers. Mother of Roger A. Gaspar (Patricia) of Port Charlotte, FL, and Bruce R. Gaspar of Somerset. Sister of Connie Feilhauer of Somerset, Ted Rego of Florida, and the late Antone & Lucien Rego. Grandmother of Richard & Stephen Gaspar, Tascha Lyn Gaspar Haas, Aubrey Leighe Benjamin and Chelsea Marie Gaspar. Great grandmother of Aurora & Cadence Benjamin. Funeral was held Friday, October 17, 2008 from Silva-Faria Somerset Funeral Home with a Mass offered in St. Thomas More Church, celebrated by Msgr. Edmund Fitzgerald. Pallbearers were: Larry Feilhauer, Mark Feilhauer, Ronald Soares, Ronald Rego, Richard Gaspar & Stephen Gaspar. Interment was in St. Patrick Cemetery, Fall River. Donations in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army of Fall River.
