Philip T. Ledo, 88, of Westport, passed away peacefully at home July 26 while surrounded by his loving family. He was married to the late Mary (Farias) Ledo from 1947 until her death in 2002.

Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Manuel and Gilda (Estrella) Ledo. A World War II Navy veteran and Purple Heart recipient, he served on the USS Birmingham in the Pacific Ocean. He was injured Oct. 24, 1944, in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, while attempting to extinguish a fire on the nearby USS Princeton, which had been bombed by the Japanese. An explosion on the carrier rocked the Birmingham, killing more than 200 of its crew.

After the war, Philip worked for the Brockton VA Hospital and then for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works.

He was the beloved father of Deborah Ledo Boiros (husband Thomas) of Taunton and Elizabeth Ledo Devitt (husband Mark) of Fall River; devoted grandfather of Craig and Chad Morin, Ashleigh Boiros, and Philip and Amanda Devitt; great-grandfather of Chase and Daytonah; and brother of the late William T. Ledo. He also leaves several nieces, nephews and godchildren.

He loved his family, making people laugh and giving to those in need.

His funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 30, in our Fall River Chapel followed by his committal with military honors at the Notre Dame Mausoleum where he was entombed. In his memory, donations can be made to Southcoast Hospice, 200 Mill Road, Suite 120, Fairhaven, MA, 02719.
