Obituary

Raymond Mullen, 83, of Swansea, husband of Anna (Rego Silva) Mullen, passed away surrounded by family on Friday, February 18, 2022, at Fall River HealthCare Center after a four-month illness. Born in Fall River, a son of the late Francis Mullen and the late Agnes (Alston) Mullen, he resided in Swansea most of his life.

He worked for many years at the Naval Underwater Systems Center (NUSC) in Newport, now called the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), retiring in 1994. Raymond had also served his country honorably in the US Air Force for four years in the late 1950s.

A parishioner of St. Patrick's Church in Somerset, he was a member of its Men's Club. A member of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Cassidy Council #3669 of Swansea, Raymond was also a longtime member, past president, and former champion of the council's Tuesday night golf league at Wampanoag Golf Course, formerly at Hidden Hollow. Besides being an avid golfer, often walking the course, he enjoyed staying fit, working out, playing basketball, and chopping wood in his backyard.

He enjoyed travelling with his wife and for 20 years they wintered in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he also enjoyed sunfish sailing in a local club that he helped run for a while and was a champion sailor. Raymond also became a champion ping pong player for a time as a member of his workplace ping pong league. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, who could do no wrong.

Friends with whom he competed in the various sports he enjoyed will miss his camaraderie and great sense of humor.

Besides his wife, of 63 years, he is survived by: two children, Peter F. Mullen (wife Kerri) of Woodstock, Georgia, and Pamela A. Campos (companion Edward Vieira) of Swansea; one sibling, Marjorie Normand of Somerset; five grandchildren, Reiley, Megan, Colby, Bailey, and Brianna; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Russell Mullen and Donald Mullen.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, February 26th, at St. Patrick's Church in Somerset followed by his committal with military honors at the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Ray's memory to a charity of one's choice.
