Rosa Sousa, 91, of Somerset, widow of Antonio V. Sousa, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. Born in Fall River, daughter of the late Manuel & Maria (Medeiros) Amaral, she was raised in the Azores, living there for twenty of her younger years, from 1930 to 1950, returning to the United States at age 25, and residing in Fall River most of her life – having also lived for a short time in New Jersey, and in Somerset for the past 5 years.

Prior to her retirement some many years ago, she worked as a presser at various local area textile mills, including the former Sonesta, and was a member of the ILGWU (now UNITE). Most recently a communicant at Holy Rosary Church, she was also a former parishioner at St Anthony of Padua Church and longtime member of its Women's Guild. Rosa was an exemplary caregiver to so many of her family and friends over the years, especially in the love and support she provided her husband for over 30 of his final years until his death in 2008.

She is survived by: two sons, Anthony W. Sousa (wife Nancy) of Fall River, Joseph Sousa (wife Elaine) of Swansea; a sister, Honorina "Noreen" Amaral of Fall River; a granddaughter, Erica Barboza (husband Michael) of Swansea; 2 great grandchildren, Elin & Lucas; many nieces & nephews; and several godchildren. She was also a sister of the late William Amaral and the late Joseph Amaral (whose wife, Hilda, lives in FL).

Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, December 28th, in Holy Rosary Church followed by her committal at St Patrick Cemetery.
Rosa's family is sincerely grateful to all of her caregivers, especially hospital staff who attended to her needs with such kindness in her final days.
