Stephan Carl Flanagan, retired Superintendent of the Swansea School system, passed away Tuesday at the age of 62, surrounded by his loving family. "Captain Steve" was born in Fall River and the son of the late Louis J. and Ruth M. Flanagan. A graduate of Joseph Case High School, he received an AB from Providence College and a graduate degree in education from Rhode Island College. In 2008, Steve earned his license as a Captain in the Massachusetts Maritime Service. After graduation from PC, Steve taught at St. Raymond's School and was a biology teacher at Case High School then in school administration, business manager, assistant superintendent and retired as Superintendent of Schools in 2010. As Superintendent of Swansea schools, Steve was a member of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, Past President of the Old Colony Superintendents Association and numerous professional groups including as a member of the Board of Directors and past president of the South Coast Education Collaborative. He also served on regional advisory boards serving the South Coast Region. His enjoyment of teaching extended to being an Adjunct Professor of School of Finance and Leadership with the Graduate Schools of Boston University, Northeastern University, Fitchburg State College and Simmons College. Steve's dedication to the community extended to his service on the Board of Directors of the Battleship Massachusetts Memorial and in Tiverton, where he previously resided, as Tax Assessor/Chairman, School Board/Chairman, Town Council member, State Democratic Committee and the Harbor Commission where he served on the Harbor Patrol Boat. Every summer Steve could be found on his boat, the "Irish Mist." He was known as an accomplished captain and fisherman. Steve's interests extended to navigation, guitars, building fine furniture and custom yacht interiors. He is survived by his wife Cynthia G. Flanagan, daughter Jennifer A. Flanagan; son Christopher H. Flanagan (wife Becky), three grandchildren Connor, Grace and Miles, brother Michael L. Flanagan (wife Kathleen), family member Gerard Holder, sister-in-law Carol A. Treible and several nieces and nephews. Following Steve's wish to be cremated, his family accepted visitors at a memorial gatnering in our Somerset Chapel on Friday, July 1, followed by a Memorial Mass on Saturday in Holy Name Church in Fall River.
