Stephen A. Mello, 72, of Portsmouth, passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with Pompe Disease on Friday October 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Carol L. (Dias) Mello for 49 years. Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Inez (Rapoza) Majcher and Arthur S. Mello.
Stephen joined the Laborers’ Union Local 610 and worked as a laborer, then became Auditor and served the Executive board as Recording Secretary, before becoming Business Manager and Secretary-Treasurer of Local 610 for 22 years.
He also held positions of Delegate to the Mass Laborers District Council, joined its Executive Board, served as Vice President of the Mass and Northern New England Laborers District Council. He served as Trustee for the Mass Laborers Annuity Fund, served on the Bristol County Employment Board, and as President and Vice President of the Southeastern Mass Building Trades.
An avid saltwater fisherman, Stephen loved being on the boat with his wife Carol. He loved spending time with his family, playing golf, and playing poker with friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; children, Stephen A. Mello, Jr. and Stephanie A. Casey (husband Stephen); grandchildren, Kamryn, Isabelle, and Abigail; and brother, Louis Majcher and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 10 at 10:00 AM at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 48 16th Street, Fall River, MA. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 9 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Silva-Faria Funeral Home, 730 Bedford Street, Fall River, MA.
