Obituary

Susan C. Silvia, 65, a Somerset resident most of her life, died on Monday the 27th day of June at Saint Anne's Hospital after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma, having been treated at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute for 10 years. Formerly of Fall River and then of Somerset, she was the daughter, and only child, of the late Edward and Deolinda (Cabral) O'Grodnik. She was educated in the Somerset public schools and went on to receive her BS degree from Bridgewater State Teachers College.
In 1972 she was married to John Silvia, Jr., also of Somerset. Together, they had three children.
Primarily a devoted stay at home mother, after her children grew older, she served as a substitute teacher in the Somerset School system. She also was a past member and president of the former Somerset Women's P.M. Club and later instituted an annual scholarship, through the Somerset Citizens Scholarship Foundation, on behalf of the Women's club, which scholarship is given each year to a Somerset-Berkley Regional High School student. She also served as a member and President of the Somerset High School Boosters Club. She additionally was active in numerous charitable organizations, including the Cystic Fibrosis Local Chapter and the American Cancer Society, among others.
She leaves her devoted husband, "Jack", her three sons, John R. Silvia and his fiancée Kristine, Dr. James E. Silvia and his fiancée Hollie, and Justin A. Silvia and his wife Erin. She also leaves her five Grandchildren, John, Madison, Hadley, Anderson and Carter Silvia, and three Step-Grandchildren, Drew, Nathan, and Kayla. She is also survived by her mother-in-law Hortense Silvia, her brother-in-law Jerald Silvia and his wife Laurie, and her brother-in-law Jeffrey Silvia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, July 6th, to be offered in St Thomas More Church in Somerset followed by her committal at St Patrick Cemetery in Fall River.
