FRATER, Suzy V. (Pataki) 84 of Providence, Narragansett and Sarasota, Florida passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 13, 2016. She is now reunited with her beloved husband of more than 60 years, the late Stephan I. Frater M.D. and two children, Stephan Jr. and Marian Deanna "Andy" Frater.
Born in Budapest, Hungary, to the late Rozsa Livia Ratonyi and Odon Pataki, she emigrated to the United States in 1956 along with her parents, husband and son, Stephan Jr – fleeing the Hungarian Revolution. Suzy started her career as a pediatric nurse in Budapest and later focused on raising her children, volunteering at their schools and actively supporting numerous charitable organizations.
Suzy was a gracious and elegant woman. Her smile and laugh were infectious. She was a lover of all things living, especially four-legged humans as she called them. All creatures were equal in her eyes. Her home was open to many animals and never without at least one. She enjoyed summers by the shore being nicknamed "Sunshine Suzy". She was an avid bridge player, opera lover and world traveler. She delighted many with her Hungarian cuisine.
She served on various boards and organizations including the International Institute of RI, Christian Couples Club, Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, Providence Garden Club, Hungarian Medical Association of America Auxiliary and Friends of Animals. Summers she spent her time at the Dunes Club, and split her time between the Hope Club and University Club while on the East Side.
She leaves behind: a daughter, Dr. Susan Candace Stephens (Henry M. Diamond) of Providence; a son, Thomas P.B. Frater (Daniela G.) of Vienna, Austria; and grandchildren, James Christopher Stephens, and Thomas Jr, Hope Elizabeth, and twins Andrew and Stephan Frater, all of whom will miss her terribly.
Her Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, June 18th, in the Chapel at the Little Sisters of the Poor, 964 Main Street, Pawtucket, followed by her entombment at Swan Point Cemetery.
