Thomas And
Patricia Ferreira
d. Jul 11, 2023
Thomas and Patricia Ferreira, originally of Fall River, both passed away in 2023, Tom on Jan. l after a brief illness, Pat on July 11 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Both were 84. They were married for 64 years.
Tom suffered a coronary event the day after Christmas, 2022, and was rushed to Charlton Memorial Hospital; his last days were spent peacefully in hospice at Charlton, where he died on New Year's Day, 2023. Pat, determined to outlive her diagnosis, spent her last week at home in hospice.
Tom was born on April 6, 1938, to Mary (Bemardo) and Antone Ferreira, both deceased, and lived on the bottom of Davis Street with his two brothers, Paul and the late Albert ("Sonny") Ferreira, and his sister, the late Lucille ("Lou") Sullivan.
Tom graduated from Diman Vocational High School in 1956, where he excelled in soccer, ultimately being inducted into the Diman Hall of Fame. He married Pat, the former Patricia Carreiro, also of Davis Street, in 1958 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, and the two remained in Fall River until 1965, when they moved to Swansea.
Pat was born on July 15, 1938, to Margaret (Franco) and John Carreiro, both deceased. She also grew up on the top of Davis Street and graduated from BMC Durfee High School in 1956.
They spent the first six years of their married life on Orange Street in Fall River, before moving, in 1965, to their house on CliffAvenue in Swansea, frequently hosting gatherings for family and friends. They spent the last 19 years at Countryview Estates in Tiverton, where they gardened, fed the birds, chatted with neighbors, made puzzles, and traveled to Texas, to France, and to Sao Miguel, Azores, home of their ancestors. Most of all, they loved and were loved by their children and grandchildren, whom they adored.
Tom worked at G.T. Sheldahl, where he was a machinist; as a co-owner of Billy's Cafe on Bedford Street in Fall River; as head of maintenance at Ann & Hope in Seekonk; and at New England Power Company in Somerset. Pat worked at Loring Studio and Trina, both in Fall River, and at the Rhode Island School of Design.
They were members of St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Tiverton.
Their unwavering devotion to family and friends, tireless compassion and generosity, and fondness for reminiscing endeared them to all who enjoyed the pleasure of their company. They worked hard, laughed a lot, grieved the loss of loved ones, voted vigilantly, and were keenly interested in others. They likely visited half the food venues in New England.
They are survived by their three children, Linda Ferreira-Buckley (and her husband, Tom Buckley) ofAustin, Texas, Thomas M. Ferreira of Swansea, and Melissa Ferreira of Pont-Aven, France; four grandchildren, Thomas J. Ferreira (and his wife, Anna) of Boston, Cory M. Ferreira (and his wife, Laura Willming) of London, England, Thomas M. Buckley Jr. of Quito, Ecuador, and Ariel M. Ferreira of Swansea; and two great-grandchildren, Thomas "TJ" Ferreira Jr. and Sloane Ferreira, both of Boston. They are also survived by Tom's brother, Paul Ferreira, and their sister-in-law, Nancy Ferreira, of Fall River, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. They also loved their honorary daughter Jane and son Stephen.
The family is especially grateful to Paul and Nancy, Teresa and Frank, and neighbors Joanne, Dave and Eileen for their kindness.
They are also grateful for the staff, nurses, doctors and medical personnel at Charlton, St. Anne's Hospital, and Hope Hospice, and to their physicians, nurse practitioners and specialists, who provided the exceptional medical care and kind attention Tom and Pat received. Likewise, the family appreciates the expert assistance of the Tiverton Fire Department.
Family and friends are warmly invited to a memorial mass in their honor on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 1 p.m. at St. Teresa's Catholic Church on Stafford Road in Tiverton. Donations may be made in their memory to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation (npcf.us) and Citizens for Citizens (cfcincorg). No flowers, please.
Family members are always grateful for relatives and friends wishing to make in-person expressions of kindness and support. If you are unable to do so, because of health concerns or any other reason, all are urged to express their sympathy online or by mail. To ensure that said condolences and/or sympathy cards reach the family, please always make sure that submissions online are made directly through the funeral home's website (www.silvafaria.com) and not through a third party. Thank you!
