Fall River

Obituary

Venancio DeMelo, 95, of Fall River, husband of Maria (Soares) DeMelo, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 22, 2019 after a long illness.

Born in Agua Retorta, St. Michael, Azores, he was a son of the late Manuel and Rosa Mariana (Raposo) Melo.

Prior to his retirement he worked in the silversmith industry for many years. A long-time member of the Don Carlos Club, he also loved gardening, tending to his grapevines and making his own wine. Venancio enjoyed going on cruises and traveling to such places as Canada, Florida, and to his homeland in the Azores. But what was most important to him was spending quality time with his loving family.

Besides his wife of sixty-eight years, he leaves: his sons, David S. Melo and his wife, Natalie, and Paul DeMello and his wife, Anna, both of Fall River; seven grandchildren, Michael Mello, Scott Mello, Joshua Melo, Felicia Melo, Victoria Mello, Matthew Mello, and Sophia Mello; his daughter-in-law, Margaret Mello; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Manuel T. Melo and the late Joseph Melo and brother of the late Manuel T. Mello, Beatrice Botelho, Vernanda Cabral, and Maria Melo Correia.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, December 28th, in St. Anthony of Padua Church followed by his committal at St. Patrick Cemetery.
