Chief Petty Officer Wallace Ray Luhman, USN RET, age 84, of Swansea, Massachusetts, passed away at Saint Anne's Hospital in Fall River, MA, on November 4, 2008, following an extended illness. He was the husband of Mary (Arruda) Luhman. Born in Hammond Township, Polk County, Minnesota, he was a son of the late Emory E. Luhman and the late Annie Laurie (Dewar) Luhman. Enlisting in the United States Navy in 1942, he would remain in the service for thirty years, a career that included two wars, World War II and Korea, and assignments aboard eleven different warships. Most of his peace time duty was served in the Pacific aboard submarines, including the USS Lionfish, the USS Tusk and several others. Retiring from the Navy he continued to work as an electrician and instrument technician for various companies, including American Dryer, Ross Matthews, and Olin. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 303, in Swansea. In addition to Mary, his wife of sixty two years, family members include his daughter, Mrs. Brendan (Barbara) Gahan of Dartmouth, MA, a granddaughter, Mrs. Bryan (Karyn) Leonard, two great grandsons, Zachary & Cody Leonard, a great granddaughter, Payton Leonard, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late James Luhman and the late Gladys Stulpestad. Funeral Services were held at the Silva-Faria Somerset Funeral Home, Committal Services followed with Military Honors at the Vinnicum Woods Cemetery in Swansea.
