Walter Conrad's Obituary
Walter Conrad, formerly Ciszewski, died January 12, 2018, in Florida, aged 97. He was born in Forward, Pennsylvania, a coal mining town, in 1920, moving to Detroit, Michigan at the age of 6. He was the son of Michal Ciszewski and Annette (Kaleita) Ciszewski. The youngest of 6 children and the only one to go to high school, he worked his way through high school and then Wayne State College working as a barber and playing clarinet and piano in dance bands.
He went on from that to get a Master's degree in chemistry from the University of Chicago and a PhD in chemistry from the University of Kansas. He taught Organic Chemistry for many years at Southeastern Massachusetts University in Dartmouth, MA; he previously taught at Ohio Northern University and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and also worked as a chemist at several corporations.
He was married to the late Helen (Ulatowska) Conrad, and has two daughters, Laura Conrad of Cambridge MA and Judith Conrad of Fall River.
After retiring he lived in Solveig, CA, Hillsdale, MI and Land O' Lakes, FL. He remained active, playing tennis well into his 80s. Perhaps above all he was a committed amateur musician who sang bass in many choral societies and loved to play the piano. A great reader, a great arguer, a very committed intellectual. To quote from Chaucer, 'And gladly would he learn, and gladly teach.'
Following cremation, His Memorial Service was held on Monday, January 22nd, at St. Luke's Church in Fall River.
